7/25/2023 0 Comments Memoria ff9![]() Unless we have Square Enix permission, we won’t. As I said, It’s a proof-of-concept, we’re not really going to make it playable. I think we’ll be able to find a mix of both. ‘Persona’ is also a turn-based game, but it’s flashy, fast-paced, and dynamic. It’ll be a lot more dynamic For example, imagine ‘Persona 5’. So while I say I want us to be authentic, I would be in Areas where it’s possible to improve without breaking the authenticity, so as we get closer to the fighting I’d definitely keep them turn-based, but they won’t be as slow as in the original game. A lot of people are put off the fighting – they’re probably the slowest on the show. ![]() “Final Fantasy IX is a slow game and people know it. “I think the fights are one thing that I would really like to redesign, but not in the way you might expect,” says Eder. Once the Alexandria part of the game is completed, the next milestone will be to implement a combat system. The team plans to build mechanisms into the project, but only to show what things would be like in a modern game – never with the intention of someone playing. “īut that doesn’t mean that “Memoria Project” will just be a scene in a game engine. If Square Enix decided to officially evolve the game, it would have to support with a much larger team and the appropriate financial resources. We’re not using anything from the original game. Send a lot of fans us messages saying, ‘I hope you guys release the whole game.’ This is a misunderstanding of what we’re trying to do. “I’d love to do that, but we’re so far removed from this reality at the moment that with the size of the team it’s not even remotely possible, especially when you consider that this is all volunteer work. “We just want to represent a kind of ‘what-if-scenario’, but design the whole game like that? It’s a completely different matter,” says Eder. Redesigning all of Final Fantasy IX’s environments would be a daunting undertaking. The Alexandria portion of the game – which the “Memoria Project” focused on – makes up less than one percent of “Final Fantasy IX”. To reproduce all of this with today’s graphic quality is a Herculean task. There’s a reason the “Final Fantasy VII” remake doesn’t even cover the entire first disc of the three-part PlayStation original – these worlds are huge and filled with villages, towns, and characters. Should this hypothetical scenario occur, however, the team would have to grow dramatically. As long as we get their approval, we can start planning how to actually make the game playable. In a hypothetical situation where I now get an email from Square Enix and they say, ‘Let’s see if we can make a real product out of this ‘then we can work towards it. “We would be able to post it locally but not publicly. “Even if we wanted to publish it, it is not optimized for the public,” says Eder. “Memoria Project” will release another trailer in mid-2022, which will show more characters in a longer, “more exciting” sequence than the first trailer. In other words: fans have to be content with trailers and screenshots. The team is experienced enough to create something playable, but the goal is not to lose the project to a court order. ![]() ![]() When I started this project, one of my main concerns was to make sure I didn’t step on Square Enix or put myself in legal danger. ![]() “We have no intention of making it playable. “Even the term ‘game’ is tricky,” explains Eder. To avoid being pulled from the market by lawyers, Memoria Project will never be downloadable or in any way playable by anyone outside the core development team. Fan games keep dropping because big companies need to protect their intellectual property. “Memoria Project” is not a game – it is a work of art. Around 30 people are currently working on it in their free time – alongside their full-time jobs in large studios.īut don’t be too excited if the original game means the same to you. Seasoned game developers who loved “Final Fantasy IX” wanted to bring their talents to the “Memoria Project”. No sooner had the two screenshots of their first work published than the first applications came in. So we started to work together on the redesign of the entire tavern area of Alexandria. So I reached out to him and he was immediately enthusiastic about the idea. The game has great environments and I’ve seen some ‘Final Fantasy’ merchandise in his portfolio. “So I reached out to Colin Valek who was working on ‘Ghost of Tsushima’ at Sucker Punch. “But then I was like, ‘You know what, let’s go a step further, let’s try to put that in an environment and model a Final Fantasy IX remake,'” says Eder.
